Overview and Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs in geology are intended for students who plan research careers in academic institutions, industry, or government agencies. Our programs are designed to give student a comprehensive understanding of his or her specialized area and training in methods of research. The primary goals of our programs are to provide rigorous coursework in geology and related disciplines, as well as necessary tools for students to conduct original and significant research. Research specialization in our programs includes, but not limited to, geochemistry, geomorphology, geophysics, hydrology, mineralogy, paleontology, petroleum geology, petrology, and structural geology. The Ph.D. degree represents the students’ mastery of the problems, techniques and knowledge covering many disciplines listed above. The final basis for granting the degree is the student’s grasp of the subject matter as displayed in coursework, qualifying examination, and competency to plan and conduct independent research.
Program Types and Admission Requirements
Our department offers two types of Ph.D. tracks: the Research track (Program 1.1 and 1.2) and the Coursework combined with Research track (Program 2.1 and 2.2). Each track requires different qualifications, depending on student’s academic background and research experience. Applicants who already completed a Master’s degree in geology, geological engineering, or other related fields must apply to Program 1.1 or 2.1. Students who are currently enrolled or already completed a Bachelor’s degree in in geology, geological engineering, or other related fields must apply to Program 1.2 or 2.2.
