การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศและความแปรปรวนของสภาพอากาศในปัจจุบันส่งผลกระทบต่อระบบเศรษฐกิจและสังคมในหลายประเทศทั่วโลก นักวิชาการกำลังให้ความสนใจอย่างมากเกี่ยวกับการศึกษาสภาพภูมิอากาศ ทั้งในปัจจุบันและในอดีต เพื่อใช้เป็นข้อมูลเบื้องต้นในการคาดการณ์การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต
